What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is characterised by brown patches that are darker in colour than the surrounding skin. It can be influenced by inflammation, resulting in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and also by sun exposure. The latter deepens the melanin in areas where melasma, freckles, and solar lentigo may be present.

What causes hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is caused by an excess of melanin production. Several different conditions or lifestyle factors can influence this overproduction, but the most common are sun exposure or trauma to the skin.

Which Formulations should I use to help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation?

Morning Ritual

#1 The Serum: this sophisticated, skin-comforting serum intuitively nurtures skin resilience to enhance skin calmness and clarity day by day.

#2 The Serum: this potent serum fortifies skin against the appearance of oxidative stress while cultivating a healthy brilliance and even tone.

#3 The Tinted Serum SPF50+: this hydrating daily serum imparts a radiant, translucent finish while offering advanced solar and environmental protection.

Evening Ritual

#4 The Cleanser: this luxurious crème formulation re-establishes skin integrity as all remains of the day are gently removed.

#5 The Serum: this sophisticated skin-refining serum recalibrates skin’s pH balance for a more even, smoother appearance.

#6 The Night Crème: this sumptuous evening creation initiates profound transformation. As skin rejuvenation is supported, sustained hydration is delivered throughout the night.

Are melasma and hyperpigmentation the same?

Melasma is a form of hyperpigmentation driven by hormonal changes in the body. Melasma is often identified by symmetrical brown patches on the upper lip, orbital bone, cheeks, and sometimes a circular patch in the centre of the forehead. A Dermatologist can diagnose this skin condition and prescribe skincare or topical medication to assist in breaking down excess melanin in the skin.

What is the link between pregnancy and hyperpigmentation?

Hormonal fluctuations can occur during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This can increase our melanocyte-stimulating hormones and therefore an excess production of melanin. It can be difficult to treat the appearance of hyperpigmentation in those who are pregnant or breastfeeding as many of the recommended active ingredients are not suitable for those in this stage of life.

Which Formulations should I use to help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation during pregnancy?

Skin brightening actives, such as Vitamin B and C, are commonly recommended to those experiencing hyperpigmentation during pregnancy. It is also suggested to double down on SPF Formulations during the day.

In the evening, a good cleansing Ritual will help to ensure your barrier function is working well. This could be followed by a gentle dose of active ingredients—such as a low dose of Hydroxy Acids or Peptides, and a Vitamin A alternative such as Bakuchiol—to increase cellular turnover.

Which RATIONALE Facial Treatments help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation?

The RATIONALE Vitality Rejuvenating Facial is the perfect Treatment for anyone experiencing uneven skin tone. This Treatment features a Lactic Acid Enzyme Complex to brighten tone, and an infusion of Vitamin C for firmer, more radiant skin.
